Camden Station Elementary INFORMATION ABOUT SCHOOL BASED DECISION MAKING COUNCILS (SBDM) What is the SBDM Council? The SBDM Council is the governing body for the school. It determines school policy for curriculum, staffing, discipline, scheduling, instructional practices, extra-curricular activities, and other matters pertinent to the operation of the school. Serving on the Council is both rewarding and difficult in that members often have to put personal agendas aside and consider decisions that are in the best interest of the school versus their personal situations. Who serves on the Council? Two parent representatives, three teacher representatives, one classified representative and the Principal. Who may run for the Council? Any parent, stepparent, foster parent, or legal guardian of a student who will be attending Camden Station during the parent’s term of office may run for the Council. A parent is ineligible if he/she is an employee or a relative of an employee of Camden Station, a local school board member, or the spouse of a school board member. The parent representative is not representing the PTA; he/she represents every parent in the school. If I want to run for the SBDM Council, what do I do? Complete the nomination form below and return it to the office by Friday, May 9, 2008, 4:00 p.m. You may nominate yourself or another parent if you have that parent’s consent. Nominations from the floor will not be permitted. You must also attach a brief narrative, maximum of 300 words, that describes experiences you have participated in that had an impact on the students at Camden Station and/or your previous school. Who may vote in the election? Any parent or legal guardian of a student currently enrolled at Camden Station. If I run for the SBDM Council can I campaign? Per SBDM Policy 1007 parent candidates may post campaign information in an area designated by the Principal. The only other campaigning that is permitted is restricted to the PTA newsletter. The PTA may call a special meeting for the purpose of providing time for the candidates to orally present their qualifications and motives for Council service to the school PTA members within limits determined by the PTA Executive Board. Candidates are not permitted to lobby during arrival/dismissal periods. How and where is the election held? The election will be held on May 16, 2008 from 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. A locked box and ballots will be located in the office. Parents are welcome to vote between the designated hours. Office staff will be present to verify the voter’s name and that he/she has a student(s) registered at Camden Station. A representative from the PTA Executive Board will count the ballots at 4:00 and notify the Principal of the outcome. Complete this form and return to the office by Friday, May 9, 2008, 4:00 p.m. |
